Internet Classes for Beginners

The Internet Classes for Adult Beginners has been extremely successful but would not have been possible without Sameer Eliyas who volunteered to teach adult Khatri's how to get online.

With modern technology ever changing, alot of older Khatri's felt disconnected and unable to get the help they needed to build their confidence and use the internet. We saw a need for this in our community and it was an instant hit!

The students are progressing well and building confidence in every session and furthermore, they are enjoying the freedom it has now given them.

If you would like to join, please contact Sameer on 07779 259241

Eid Presents For Children At LRI

Muslims all over the world will be celebrating Eid-Al-Fitr this weekend after a month of obligatory fasting (Ramadan).

The MKA wanted to make it an Eid to remember for the children who are in-patients at the Leicester Royal Infirmary by giving them gifts to celebrate this auspicious day. On Friday 17th August, MKA representatives took over 200 toys to the LRI and were able to give these out to quite a few children. The staff, parents and children felt this was a wonderful gesture and one parent was so overwhelmed, she insisted on giving a donation.

MKA left the children very happy and they forgot their pain for a short while.

MKA intend to carry on with this in the future.

Iftari in the Park...

The ‘Iftar Flashmob’, made up of members of the Muslim Khatri Association, Association of Muslim Police Officers and the PREVENT Engagement Team, invited the homeless and all other members of the community to join them at Spinney Hill Park marquee.

The event was broadcast through MKA alerts, FMO radio, posters, e-mails and word of mouth. The wider community was asked to donate food, drink, disposables and volunteer to help on the day. The response was overwhelming from all communities and this iftari programme was a great success!!

A marquee was put up in Spinney Hill Park and decorated with balloons and Ramadan Mubarak bunting and colourful MKA Ramadan Greeting posters. Tables were laid out with food, drinks, desserts, sweets, cakes, chocolates and fruit, all with MKA logo flags on each dish.

Children and adults broke fast together. Prayers were said in English and Arabic.

Billy Dedat, from the PREVENT Engagement Team, said: “During Ramadan Muslims get a glimpse of what it is like to be hungry. However we must think about those people who do not have the luxury of a decent meal at the end of the day. Tuesday night’s event gave us a great opportunity to share our food with neighbours and community members and to build on the community spirit that we have.

“The Muslim Khatri Association has kindly worked with us to make this happen, they have been great ambassadors for promoting this good cause and we all got together and enjoyed the evening and helped those who are less fortunate within our community and our city.”

Inspector Bill Knopp, commander of Spinney Hill Park Police Station, said: "We are fortunate to get many offers during Ramadan to partake in Iftar.  This is our opportunity to invite the community to our own event, in recognition of how significant the Holy month of Ramadan is for many of our residents and staff."

Vice Chair of the MKA, Mumtaz said: "Thanks to the generosity of everyone from all communities, this iftari programme was such a great success".

Mumtaz meets Carla

Carla Smith carries the 2012 Olympic Torch

Carla carried the Olympic Torch on Monday July 2nd 2012 through Oadby, Leicester.

Carla Smith, PA in the Transplant Laboratory LGH, carried the Olympic Torch when it arrived in Leicester on July 2nd. Carla carried the lighted flame on the stretch from Oadby to Leicester . Carla was nominated, and chosen by the London Olympic Committee Of the Games (LOCOG) for her enthusiasm and dedication to sport following her live-related renal transplant in 2001 operated on by the LGH Transplant team. Her sister was the donor

Mumtaz Suleman (Vice Chair) got to meet Carla and got a chance to hold the Olympic Torch which was a once in a liftime time chance, so she took it!!  "This is a fine example of

why we need to start thinking of becoming organ donors."

Toys for Sick Children

TOYS FOR SICK CHILDREN AT LRI A/E TO MARK EID UL ADHA 2013

Once again, on the blessed day of Eid Ul Adha, representatives of the MKA handed new toys which were CE approved to all children at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. All the staff appreciated this gesture and were very welcoming. The children and parents were very grateful for receiving the toys and were also informed why MKA were donating these toys.  All the toys were bought from donations gratefully received by MKA from well-wishers.

MKA Hajj Talk 2012

MKA Hajj Talk/Advice Event

A Hajj Talk/Advice Event was organised for Muslims attending the annual pilgrimage of Hajj this year.  A text message was sent out to everyone subscribed to MKA Text Alerts and announcements were made in local Mosques. The event took place at the MKA Centre on Friday 5th October 2012 at 6.30pm. Guest speaker for the event was Hafiz Rehman from Bilal Mosque who kindly agreed to do the talk, explaining the etiquettes and requirements of Hajj and answered any questions or worries. Light refreshments were donated by a well wisher.
The event went well and we hope to repeat this event in the future.

Free First Aid Course

MKA Oranised Free First Aid Course

Free First Aid Course for the Khatri Community by the British Red Cross
This course took place at the MKA Centre on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October. A text alert was sent out to everyone subscribed to MKA Text Alerts. Response was great and the event was fully booked - 40 participants. The Course went well and feedback received from attendees was positive. Everyone left with more confidence in dealing with emergency situations such as helping someone who is choking, bleeding heavily, burns and scalds, heart attack, stroke, unconscious or not breathing. Everyone received a certificate from the British Red Cross and these will be framed and given to the participants by the MKA. As the response was so great and a number of children have shown an interest in doing the course, the MKA hope to organise more sessions in December 2012 for both adults and children.

RABI-UL-AWWAL –EID MILAD-UN-NABI PROGRAMME 2013

Rabi-ul-Awwal is the holy month when our Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) was born. This was the first ever EID MILAD-UN-NABI Programme held in the history of the MKA and also a first ever Muslim Community Centre to hold this Event, which took place at the MKA Centre on Friday 8th February 2013 in the main hall of the centre which was decorated with special banners, flags and bunting marking this special event. The guest of honour was Hafizur Rehman from Masjid Bilal, who led the event. Naats were prayed by several people and there was a talk on the reason why we hold Milad and about MKA history. At this event we got to also know that we had a lot of Khatri’s in the community from all age groups who had such talents of praying Naat’s. The event was attended by over 100 people and was a huge success.  MKA Committee Members were commended on how well the event was organised. The evening ended with everyone taking Niyaaz (jam puffs, crisp, apples and drinks) with them which were donated by Committee Members and well-wishers.

MKA giveaway toys for sick children

The MKA celebrated the festival of Eid Ul Fitr by donating gifts of toys, craft activities, games, jigsaws, books, play dough (all with CE safety marks) to sick children at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Volunteers appealed to local business, family  friends and the community to donate gifts that that were then distributed among the sick children, making this unique initiative the first of its kind in Europe!
Both children and staff were overwhelmed with the generosity of the community and extremely grateful; “this is a really brilliant idea” said Vanessa Roberts, child specialist at the LRI.
The MKA organised the gift giving to coincide with Eid and to commemorate their 35th year anniversary.

MKA provide Eid lunch for the elderly

Elderly Muslims were invited to celebrate Eid with others between 2pm and 5pm at the MKA hall. The aim of the event was to bring isolated elderly muslims with no family all under one roof to celebrate this wonderful occasion in the company of others and not alone. Arif Cassam Vice-Chairman said “The idea came when I was at work as a taxi driver and I picked up and elderly person. The conversation turned to Eid and she was unhappy that on this auspicious day she would spend it alone”.
Overall, the event was a great success and we hope to organise future events in the coming year.

MKA: Brushing shoulders with Jesse

MKA was invited to attend a conference on 'Roots of Violent Radicalisation' hosted at DMU where Reverend Jesse Jackson recieved an honorary degree from DMU. One of the world’s most famous civil rights campaigners, Reverend Jackson, who twice ran for president in America in the 1980s, was a keynote speaker at this event.

The event focused around the root causes of violent radicalisation in the UK, the individuals and groups vulnerable to radicalisation and where this radicalisation tends to take place.

Reverend Jackson’s keynote speech looked into the lessons learnt from the US experience of tackling radicalisation.

Keith Vaz MP, who is chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, said: “The roots of violent radicalisation remains a subject of great national interest".

Other speakers addressed topics such as how the experiences of Northern Ireland informed the Government’s Prevent strategy, a closer look at how big a threat there is from the far right, including challenges facing police today and how to counter radicalisation in prisons.

Invited speakers included:
James Brokenshire MP, Minister for Crime and Security at the Home Office,
Professor Peter Neuman, from the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence,
Ian Paisley Jnr MP, of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party and
Dr Dipu Moni MP, Foreign Minister for Bangladesh.
Dr Richard Hall, of De Montfort University.
